With gas prices still hovering around an all-time high, finding a cheap place to fill up your tank is more important than ever. Today, we’ll be taking a look at Walmart’s fuel stations to find out if gas is really cheaper at Walmart in 2023.
Who Owns Walmart’s Gas Stations?
As of 2023, all Walmart fuel stations are owned and operated by Walmart Inc.
Prior to 2016, Walmart gas stations were operated and supplied by a company called Murphy USA. However, since then, all new Walmart gas stations have been opened and operated by Walmart.
Despite the end of the Murphy-Walmart partnership, Walmart Plus members continue to receive a $0.05 discount on each gallon of gas purchased at any Murphy USA location, as reported by an Arkansas news outlet in 2020.
Many Murphy gas stations are still located in close proximity to Walmart stores, with stations primarily located in the southern and midwestern United States, with roughly 1500 locations nationwide.
At Walmart-branded gas stations, Plus members receive a $0.10 discount per gallon. As of 2023, Walmart owns and operates about 14,000 gas stations nationwide under the Walmart brand name.
What Kind of Gas Does Walmart Have?
Walmart sells both unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel. Their unleaded gas comes in three different grades–unleaded, unleaded plus, and unleaded premium.
Since splitting off from Murphy USA, Walmart buys its fuel directly from refineries.
Walmart gasoline and diesel abide by federal regulations set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). However, Walmart does not sell TOP TIER gas.
Gas prices vary drastically by location. However, Walmart gas prices tend to be at least a few cents cheaper than traditional gas stations.
If you sign up for a Walmart Plus membership for $12.95 per month, you can receive $0.10 off every gallon of gas you purchase at a Walmart gas station.
Better yet, if you pay with your Walmart Credit Card, you will receive a $0.15 per gallon discount anytime you pay with your Walmart Credit Card at a Walmart gas station.
Getting Gas At Walmart
Pumping gas at Walmart works the same way as at any other gas station. Simply pull up to a pump, insert your payment method of choice, and choose your preferred fuel type.
Anyone can purchase gas at a Walmart gas station. While Plus members receive discounts, you do not have to have a membership to get gas at Walmart.
However, Walmart’s wholesale counterpart Sam’s Club does require a membership. To learn more about the gas available at Sam’s Club, check out our post about it here.
How To Save Money By Pumping At Walmart
Anyone can save money by pumping gas at Walmart simply by taking advantage of their competitive prices.
However, you can save even more by becoming a Walmart Plus member.
Starting in 2022, Walmart began offering a $0.10 discount to all Walmart+ members on each gallon of gas purchased. This discount applies to both gasoline and diesel.
But the savings don’t stop there–you can save even more by applying for a Walmart Credit Card. By paying for your Walmart fuel with this card, you can receive a whopping $0.15 off of each gallon of gas you pump at Walmart.
As of February 2023, these are the only ways to earn discounts on Walmart gas.
