What Kind Of Paint Does Home Depot Mix?

As a major supplier of paint and many other home improvement products and supplies, Home Depot proudly offers complimentary paint mixing services to its customers.

Although some sources claim that Home Depot just started offering paint mixing services in 2021, we can confirm that the DIY retail giant has been offering these services for many years.

But Home Depot doesn’t just offer paint mixing services for paint purchased in their stores. They are also happy to mix and tint paints purchased elsewhere.

Home Depot sells a wide range of paint qualities, with their Behr paints being top of the line. However, they also sell quite a few bargain paints like PPG and Olympic which are not considered quite as good quality.

When it comes to color matching, Home Depot claims about a 90% accuracy rate.

Home Depot Paint Mixing

What Kind Of Paint Does Home Depot Mix?

One of the best things about Home Depot’s paint mixing services is that they will mix just about any type of interior or exterior paint regardless of where it was purchased.

This includes wall paint, house paint, and craft paint. Basically, any paint that comes in a conventional paint can can be mixed at Home Depot.

But remember that mixing and tinting are not the same thing. Tinting happens first and is what gives paint its desired color. Mixing is simply the process of mixing the color into the paint to distribute it evenly and ensure the paint has the right texture.

The types of paint Home Depot will tint include any interior or exterior wall, house, or craft paints that have not been previously tinted and that come in quart, half gallon, or gallon paint cans.

Home Depot will not tint:

  • Automotive paints
  • Paints that have already been tinted
  • Ready-to-use color paints or craft paints

What Colors Can Home Depot Mix?

Home Depot can mix any color under the rainbow. Even if you don’t find the color you’re looking for in Home Depot’s offering of color samples, you can bring in your own color sample and request a custom color match.

As far as we can tell, there’s literally no color on earth that Home Depot can’t match and mix.

How Does Paint Mixing Work At Home Depot?

To have your paint mixed at Home Depot, you will follow a slightly different set of steps depending on whether you are purchasing new paint or having paint you’ve already purchased re-mixed or tinted.

To have your pre-purchased paint mixed at Home Depot, simply follow these steps:

  1. Visit your local Home Depot store with your paint (if you’re requesting a custom color match, be sure to also bring your color sample with you)
  2. Visit the counter in the paint department and let them know what you need (you can request either a re-mix or a color match)
  3. In just a few minutes, your paint will be ready to take home

If you are purchasing new paint from Home Depot, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your local Home Depot and choose which paint you’d like to purchase
  2. Choose a color from the paint sample cards or have a custom color match sample ready (this could be anything from a photograph to a piece of fabric to a paint chip)
  3. Find the paint department counter and let them know you need your paint to be tinted and mixed
  4. In just a few minutes, your paint will be ready to take home

It’s important to be aware that in some cases, Home Depot might not be able to mix old paint. When paint gets too old, it dries out and can accumulate things like rust, corrosion, or even dust if it’s been stored improperly. So, if your paint isn’t in great condition to start off, Home Depot might not be able to help.

It’s also important to know that once paint has been custom tinted, it cannot be re-tinted, returned, or exchanged.

How Long Does It Take For Home Depot To Match Paint?

Color matching and paint mixing tend to be very quick processes.

If you are having your paint mixed to a color found at Home Depot, this process should only take about 5-10 minutes. However, if you bring in your own color sample for color matching, the process may take slightly longer. Overall, having your paint color matched and mixed at Home Depot should not take longer than 20 minutes.

Of course, if other customers are being helped in front of you, you might have to wait a little longer.

  1. I bought some paint on clearance at Walmart recently and was told they couldn’t tint it. Said they and all local Walmarts were having a problem getting the tints for the paint they sell. I checked and all local Walmarts said the same thing. Odd. But the price was just too good so I bought a couple gallons for a project I have been wanting to finish hoping I could go to Home Depot and get it tinted. Well as it turns out the Home Depot’s near me do not offer paint tinting unless it was purchased at a Home Depot location. Lowe’s won’t do it either. I’m so upset because I want to finish my project and I just need 2 gallons of paint tinted to even an approximate shade. A little bit off isn’t gonna ruin my project. Eff my life!
