Can You Use American Express Gift Cards At Walmart?

Walmart accepts all valid American Express cards as payment, including credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards.

Not only does Walmart accept American Express gift cards–they also sell them.

You can also visit any Walmart location in person to purchase an American Express gift card there. Gift cards are typically found close to the registers and self checkout.

Walmart sells American Express Gift Cards in the following denominations–$25, $50, $100, $200.

When purchased online, these gift cards come with a small percentage fee of about 13%. This means that when you purchase a $25 gift card, you will actually be charged $28.44 in addition to whatever you pay for shipping and handling.

When you purchase a gift card in person at Walmart, you will only be charged for the denomination of the card itself without any extra fees. Gift cards are not taxable at the time of sale.

How To Use Your American Express Gift Card?

Most AmEx gift cards come ready to use and do not require activation. So, you can simply visit your nearest Walmart, start shopping, and then pay with your gift card during checkout the same way you would with a credit or debit card.

However, if your AmEx card requires activation, it will come with instructions for how to do this. When in doubt, you can always call the customer service number on the back of the card for assistance with activation, usage, or checking your balance.

Here’s a handy video on how to activate an AmEx gift card, and another one covering the basics of how to use an AmEx gift card when shopping online.

Does Walmart Have Restrictions On American Express Gift Cards?

The only item sold at Walmart that you cannot pay for using a gift card is another gift card. Aside from this, you can use an American Express gift card to purchase just about anything for sale at Walmart or on Walmart.com.

The only catch is that every AmEx gift card has a “valid thru” date printed on the front. If this valid thru date has passed but you still have funds remaining on your card, you won’t be able to use that card as payment. But don’t worry! You’re not out of luck…

American Express gift cards technically do not expire, so if your “valid thru” date has passed, simply contact the American Express customer service number listed on the back of your card and they will send you a free replacement card containing your remaining balance.

Can You Return An American Express Gift Card After Buying It From Walmart?

Unfortunately, Walmart does not accept gift card returns. If you do not wish to use an AmEx gift card that you’ve already purchased, consider gifting it to a friend or reselling it where permitted by law.
