The key to understanding the logic behind using Walmart gift cards at Sam’s Club is that Walmart Inc. actually owns the Sam’s Club wholesale chain. Because of this, Sam’s Club and Walmart gift cards are effectively interchangeable.

Just remember: unlike Walmart, Sam’s Club is a members only wholesale supplier. So, even if you have a Walmart gift card, you still have to be a club member to use it at Sam’s Club.

How Can You Get A Walmart Gift Card?

Despite the fact that you can use Walmart gift cards at a variety of locations, they can only be purchased directly through Walmart,, or PayPal.

Some sources claim that Walmart gift cards can be purchased through Sam’s Club and as well, but we weren’t able to find any evidence for this. As of July 2022, Walmart gift cards are not sold on, though they may be available at some Sam’s Club locations.

If you’d like to purchase a Walmart gift card, simply visit a Walmart location,, or PayPal, select the gift card design that suits your needs best, and then select the amount you’d like to load onto the card.

Through PayPal, Walmart gift cards can range from $10 to $100. Through Walmart, they start at just $5 and can range up to $500.

How To Activate Your Walmart Gift Card

Despite some inconsistent information available online from related posts, Walmart gift cards do not have to be activated after purchase. The process of purchasing a Walmart gift card automatically activates it for use.

If you plan to use your Walmart gift card in person at a Walmart or Sam’s Club location, you can simply make your purchases as you normally would. During the payment process, select “credit” on the card reader, and swipe your card. You will be asked to sign the purchase receipt.

If you plan to use your Walmart gift card to shop online, then you will need to register it at before shopping. Registering your card also protects it in the event of it being lost or stolen.

How To Use A Walmart Gift Card At Sam’s Club?

Walmart gift cards are considered a valid form of payment at Sam’s Club and, just like other gift cards, credit cards or debit cards (including Mastercard, American Express, and Visa).

To use a physical gift card for store purchases at a physical Sam’s Club location:

  1. Shop as you normally would
  2. When you’re ready to check out, swipe your gift card through the card reader at the checkout counter (or hand your card to the cashier if a card reader is not available)
  3. Select “credit” as your payment option
  4. If the balance on your card is sufficient, your purchase will be approved and you will be asked to sign the receipt printout

To use a Walmart gift card for online purchases on

  1. Register your gift card at
  2. Once your card is registered, visit and shop as you normally would
  3. When you’re ready to check out, select “gift card” as your payment method
  4. Enter the information listed on your gift card (usually found on the back of the card) according to the prompts on your screen
  5. Confirm your purchase

If you are shopping with a Walmart eGift Card, use the gift card number and PIN you received via your eGift Card confirmation email after purchasing your gift card.

Remember that even though Walmart gift cards and Sam’s Club gift cards are interchangeable, only Sam’s Club members can make purchases with a Walmart gift card at Sam’s Club.
