If you’re like me, then you cannot resist a good batch of guacamole. Made primarily from delicious, ripe avocados, guacamole is arguably one of the best dips in existence. It’s creamy, filling, flavorful, and just plain delicious.
But due to the high price of avocados, guacamole can also be a pretty spendy item when you buy it pre-made. So, I decided to check out Trader Joe’s to see what kind of competitive prices they offer on their guac.
My local Trader Joe’s is currently selling five different types of guacamole–Organic Chunky Homestyle Guacamole, Avocado’s Number Guacamole, Avocado’s Number Guacamole To Go, Chunky Spicy Guacamole Auténtico, and Chunky Guacamole.
The prices of Trader Joe’s guacamole options range from $3.49 to $4.99. This means that no matter which option you choose, you can get your hands on a tub of TJ’s guacamole for under $5. Each container of guacamole available at Trader Joe’s is between 10 and 16 oz.
Considering that a single avocado costs about $2 on average, these guac prices are pretty impressive.
Because I try to eat organic whenever possible, I decided to try the Organic Chunky Homestyle Guacamole.
Ingredients and Nutrition
Trader Joe’s Organic Chunky Homestyle Guacamole is made from a simple, clean recipe containing avocados, tomatoes, lime juice, water, jalapeno peppers, dehydrated onion, salt, garlic, and cilantro. That’s it!
I love seeing that there are no added sugars or preservatives and that the recipe sticks to a classic Mexican tradition. For anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies, you’ll be pleased to know that this guacamole is both gluten free and vegan and does not contain any common allergens.
Keep in mind that because this guac does not contain any preservatives besides citrus, it won’t last for very long after being opened. Pay attention to the best-by date and make sure to eat it up within 5-7 days of opening. Always keep it refrigerated to prevent it from going bad prematurely.
As far as nutrition goes, most of the calories in this guacamole come from fat. But before you raise your eyebrows at that, remember that avocados are considered a natural source of healthy fats because they’re so rich in oils.
I personally don’t worry about my fat or carb intake as long as they’re coming from natural, unprocessed sources. Did you know that our brains actually depend on healthy fats to function? It’s true–fat is brain food.
Each 2-tablespoon serving of this chunky guacamole contains 4.5 grams of fat and 3 grams of carbs. You’ll also be getting 4% of your daily value of potassium and 2% of your iron from each serving.
My Honest Review
Before I dive into the long list of reasons why this is an amazing guacamole, let me just say that it’s absolutely delicious.
It’s clearly made with flavorful, fresh ingredients, and it’s perfectly seasoned to bring that comforting and familiar guacamole taste to the forefront.
But beyond its amazing taste, there are so many other things I love about this guacamole. First off, all of the ingredients are organic and unprocessed, which means that it fits well into a healthy diet. Plus, there’s zero sugar and zero artificial preservatives. The recipe is simple and clean, and the flavor is the perfect blend of tangy and smooth.
In my opinion, because this guacamole is certified organic, affordable, and great tasting, it qualifies as the best Trader Joe’s Guacamole available.
My only small criticism is the texture. I personally was hoping it would be just a little bit chunkier, but as far as a store-bought guacamole goes, it’s about as chunky as it gets. While most of the guac in my tub felt fairly puréed, I did come across a few sizable chunks of avocado.
At just $4.49 for a 10-oz tub, I will absolutely buy this guacamole again the next time I’m craving a high-quality, healthy dip.
